Mama Ngina Kenyatta Visits Odinga Family to Offer Condolences

Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta on Thursday, 30 October 2025, visited the home of the late Raila Odinga in Siaya County to convey her condolences to the bereaved family.
Mama Ngina arrived at Opoda Farm, the Odinga family’s rural residence, where she was received by Mama Ida Odinga and other relatives. The visit came eleven days after the burial of the former opposition leader, whose death has continued to attract tributes from across Kenya and beyond.
During the visit, the former First Lady spent time with the family in quiet reflection and expressed her personal sympathies. The Odinga family later issued a statement thanking her for the visit and her support during their period of mourning.
The meeting carried symbolic importance, reflecting the long and often intertwined history of the Kenyatta and Odinga families, both of whom have played central roles in Kenya’s political development since independence. Mama Ngina, widow of founding President Jomo Kenyatta and mother of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, remains a respected national figure.
Her presence at the Odinga homestead was seen as a gesture of unity and respect following decades of political rivalry between the two families. Tributes to Raila Odinga have continued from local and international leaders.
On 29 October, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo visited Opoda Farm, describing Odinga as “one of Africa’s great sons” whose commitment to democracy would inspire future generations. Senior Kenyan officials, including National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Cabinet Secretaries Wycliffe Oparanya and Deborah Mulongo accompanied him.
Earlier, on 20 October, former President Uhuru Kenyatta became the first senior leader to visit Raila Odinga’s grave after the funeral. He paid tribute to Odinga’s lifelong dedication to justice and democratic reform and also toured the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum to honour the broader Odinga family’s role in Kenya’s political history.
