World Athletics Ratifies Eliud Kipchoge’s Marathon World Record

World Athletics has ratified Eliud Kipchoge’s marathon world record of two hours, one minute and nine seconds.

The 38-year-old Kenyan runner set the record during last year’s Berlin Marathon, taking off 30 seconds from the previous world record that he had in the same race in 2018.

Kipchoge crossed the finish line in 2:01:09, making this the eighth consecutive men’s marathon world record to be set in Berlin.

"I am overjoyed to have broken the world record," said Kipchoge at the time. "I wanted to run the first half so fast. After 38km I knew I would be capable of breaking the world record. The circumstances were great, and so was the organization.”

This was Kipchoge’s 10th title at the World Marathon Majors, making him the most successful marathoner of all time.

Kipchoge became the only man to run a sub-two-hour marathon when he clocked 1:59.40 on a specially designed track in Vienna in 2019, but the time is not officially recognized as it was not set in competition.

When I was in the US Army, I was considered to be a good runner because I could do 2 miles in 14 minutes. Kipchoge did 26 miles in 2 hours? Wow! That averages to 13 miles in 1 hour.

@ Mark Onyango, when Geofrey Mutai won the Boston marathon in in 2hr 3mins.... the world was shocked, since at the time nobody had run that fast, anywhere.Unfortunately for him it was not a world record because Boston course has an extended downward slope that does not qualify it to be recognized for marathon world records. That's my understanding. Nowdays it is not uncommon to see at lest 3 runners going under 2hrs3 mins in the of one year. Today running 2hr 8 minutes does not raise eye brows, and yet it is a heck of an achievement. Hey, your 2hrs 14mins... was the world record in 1963.So you did pretty good.Don't know how old you are,but if you are in your 30s, with today's Vaporfly shoes, training and good diet, you still can make it big, and if do and happen to need help in counting and putting the cash in the granary look me up .I am in the actuaries.Go for it M.O.-Not to be confused with Mohammad Farrah.
