Spain secured a record prize of $51 million after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, claiming their second world title.

The victory brought Spain football's biggest prize and the largest financial reward ever awarded at a FIFA World Cup. The 2026 tournament, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, was the first to feature an expanded 48-team format.

To support the larger competition, FIFA increased the total prize fund to $871 million, almost double the $440 million distributed at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

FIFA had originally set the prize fund at $727 million before increasing it to $871 million in April to reflect higher preparation costs.

National federations also received additional funding to help cover travel, accommodation and administrative expenses during the tournament. As runners-up, Argentina received $34 million. England earned $30 million after defeating France in the third-place play-off, while France collected $28 million.

Teams eliminated in the quarter-finals received $20 million each, Round of 16 participants earned $16 million, and countries knocked out in the Round of 32 received $12 million. The 16 teams eliminated during the group stage were each guaranteed $10 million, in addition to $2.5 million in preparation funding before the tournament.

The increased payments reflect the steady growth of World Cup prize money over recent decades. Argentina received $42 million for winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar, while France earned $38 million after lifting the trophy in Russia in 2018. By comparison, Italy's 1982 World Cup victory brought a prize of just $2.2 million.

World Cup prize money is paid directly to national football federations rather than individual players. Each federation decides how the funds are distributed according to its own rules. For Spain, the victory provides both sporting success and a significant financial boost for the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

The 2026 World Cup established a new record for prize money while introducing a larger tournament that required greater travel and preparation from participating teams. Spain's success delivered both the title and the highest financial reward in the competition's history.
