A total of 3,949 Kenyans have been provisionally selected in the US Diversity Visa (DV) lottery for the 2027 fiscal year, placing Kenya among the leading African countries in the latest draw.

Kenya ranks third in Africa behind Egypt and Algeria, and ahead of Morocco, Cameroon and Ethiopia. Across the continent, 39,260 applicants were selected for the programme. The Diversity Visa programme, commonly known as the Green Card lottery, provides a route to permanent residency in the United States for eligible citizens of countries with historically low levels of migration to the US.

However, selection does not guarantee a visa. Each successful applicant receives a case number that determines the order in which cases are considered for interviews at the US Embassy in Nairobi. Applicants with lower case numbers are generally more likely to be processed earlier, while those with higher numbers may not receive an interview before the fiscal year ends on 30 September.

The programme also places a limit on the number of visas that can be issued to nationals of any one country. Although 3,949 Kenyans were selected, the statutory limit means that roughly 3,500 visas can be issued to applicants from Kenya. As a result, at least 449 selected applicants could ultimately fail to obtain visas because of the numerical limits.

The US government also selects more applicants than the number of visas available. About 130,000 people are selected globally for approximately 55,000 available visas, allowing for applicants who fail security checks, do not complete the process, miss deadlines or withdraw.

For Kenyan selectees, preparation and timing will now be important. Immigration specialists advise applicants with low case numbers to begin gathering the required documents, including police clearance certificates, valid passports and medical examination results.

Applicants should also monitor the US Department of State's monthly Visa Bulletin, which shows the case number ranges that are eligible for interview processing. Those with higher case numbers are advised to avoid unnecessary expenses until their numbers become eligible.

Fraud is another concern for applicants. The DV lottery itself does not require an application fee, and official notifications are issued through the US Department of State's designated online system. Individuals or agents who demand payment to speed up a case or guarantee visa approval are not offering a legitimate service.

The final number of Kenyans who receive DV visas will depend on case numbers, individual eligibility and security checks, as well as the availability of visas before the 30 September deadline.
