NSSF Explains How Kenyans Permanently Moving Abroad Can Access Their Savings

Kenyans permanently relocating outside the East African Community (EAC) can access their NSSF savings through the Emigration Benefit, provided they meet the Fund’s eligibility requirements.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) said applicants must demonstrate that they are permanently settling abroad and do not intend to return to Kenya. Required evidence includes migration visa documents and, for Kenyan citizens, an affidavit confirming permanent departure.

Applicants must provide an NSSF membership card, valid identification such as a national ID, passport or Alien ID, and employment records. These may include a retirement letter, certificate of service or termination notice.

Non-Kenyan citizens must also provide a travel ticket. All applicants are required to submit bank details to enable payment through Electronic Funds Transfer.

The clarification, issued on Wednesday, 9 September, follows an online exchange involving a contributor who sought to withdraw part of his savings after his employment contract ended.

NSSF reiterated that loss of employment does not, on its own, make a member eligible to access their savings. Members can claim their benefits upon retirement or when they reach the age of 50 and are no longer earning a salary.

Permanent relocation outside the EAC is a separate basis for accessing savings before retirement under the Emigration Benefit. The Fund said the benefit is intended for members who are permanently leaving the country, with eligibility subject to the required documentation and conditions.

The clarification provides guidance for Kenyans planning to settle in countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, where many Kenyans have migrated for work, study and other reasons.
