The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has seized electronic goods worth about KSh13 million during a raid on a residential apartment in Nairobi's Kileleshwa area.

The operation followed intelligence that a foreign national was allegedly storing and distributing electronic products without complying with Kenya's customs and tax requirements. KRA enforcement officers searched the apartment and recovered hundreds of devices and accessories.

The seized consignment comprised 358 laptops, nine iPads and 162 assorted electronic accessories, including chargers, batteries and Bluetooth-enabled devices. KRA said the goods may be connected to a wider network involved in importing merchandise without paying the required duties and taxes.

The authority has taken custody of the goods as investigations continue. Officials are examining the consignment to establish its origin, determine whether it was properly imported and assess any outstanding tax liabilities. KRA said preliminary findings indicate possible breaches of customs laws, although the investigation is still under way.

The seizure follows a separate operation in which KRA intercepted dozens of undeclared iPhones at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The two cases highlight the continued challenge of enforcing tax and customs requirements in Kenya's electronics market.

KRA said intelligence-led operations have also identified residential apartments in Nairobi as possible storage locations for goods suspected to have been smuggled into the country. Some traders operating retail businesses in the central business district are allegedly using such premises to store products before distributing them to customers.

Smuggled goods can give non-compliant traders an advantage over legitimate businesses that pay import duties, value-added tax and other statutory charges. The difference in costs can allow illicit traders to sell products at lower prices, putting compliant businesses at a disadvantage.

The latest operation forms part of KRA's wider efforts to combat smuggling and tax evasion. The authority said it would continue using intelligence and enforcement operations to identify individuals and networks involved in concealing, transporting and selling goods that have bypassed official customs procedures.

The increased enforcement comes as Kenya seeks to strengthen domestic revenue collection. KRA is expected to maintain surveillance of import and distribution channels as it targets activities that result in lost tax revenue and undermine compliance with customs regulations.
