Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to support a single opposition presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, saying he is ready to make personal sacrifices to help defeat President William Ruto.

Speaking to Kenyans during a church gathering in Boston, Massachusetts, the former Deputy President said opposition leaders were committed to reaching an agreement on a joint candidate despite competing political ambitions within the emerging alliance. Gachagua expressed confidence that the talks would produce a candidate capable of uniting the opposition and attracting support from voters across the country.

He said he was willing to take any role necessary to achieve that goal, stressing that individual ambitions should not stand in the way of a shared political objective.

His remarks come as opposition leaders continue discussions on how to challenge Ruto's bid for a second term. Although several politicians have expressed support for a united front, agreeing on who should lead the coalition remains a major challenge.

Gachagua dismissed concerns that differences among opposition leaders could prevent them from settling on a common candidate. He argued that doubts about opposition unity were not new in Kenyan politics and pointed to previous elections in which rival groups had put aside their differences to challenge an incumbent government.

He cited the 2002 General Election, when opposition parties united behind Mwai Kibaki to end the Kenya African National Union's (KANU) long period in power. Kibaki emerged as the opposition's flagbearer following negotiations among political leaders, and the coalition went on to defeat KANU's candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Gachagua said the 2002 experience demonstrated that opposition parties could overcome competing interests and agree on a candidate capable of winning a national election. He maintained that the timing of such an agreement was less important than the willingness of leaders to work together.

Several politicians are currently being discussed as possible contenders for the opposition's presidential ticket. They include Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang'i, People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Gachagua himself.

While the leaders have publicly called for cooperation, negotiations are expected to involve discussions over political leadership, regional representation and the interests of their respective supporters. The final decision will require the coalition to balance these competing demands while identifying a candidate who can appeal to a broad section of the electorate.

The opposition also faces the task of presenting a credible alternative to the current administration. Beyond agreeing on a presidential candidate, its leaders will need to demonstrate that they can work together, establish common policy priorities and maintain unity throughout the campaign.

Gachagua's position is that a united opposition will have a stronger chance of defeating Ruto than parties campaigning separately.
