President William Ruto has challenged opposition leaders to present clear policies and practical solutions ahead of the 2027 General Election, dismissing their criticism of his administration as lacking substance.

Speaking during a development tour of Nandi County, the President said he was ready to defend his record and seek a second term based on his administration’s achievements. He urged his opponents to focus on policies that address Kenya’s economic and social challenges rather than personal attacks and campaign slogans.

His remarks come as opposition leaders seek to form a united front against the Kenya Kwanza administration. The group is pursuing a strategy of fielding a single presidential candidate in August 2027 to avoid splitting votes and improve its chances of defeating the incumbent.

However, efforts to agree on a common candidate face challenges, with several prominent opposition figures believed to be interested in running for president. The competition for leadership has raised questions about whether the parties can remain united long enough to offer a credible alternative to the current government.

Ruto used his address to question the opposition’s policy direction, arguing that its criticism was not matched by practical proposals. He dismissed anti-government chants and calls for him to serve only one term, saying his opponents had failed to present a clear agenda for governing the country.

The President defended his administration’s record, citing fertiliser subsidies, affordable housing, road construction, rural electrification and reforms to the national healthcare system. He also pointed to the growing number of Kenyans registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), presenting the figures as evidence of progress in implementing government programmes.

Ruto said these initiatives would form a central part of his re-election campaign. His message focused on the delivery of development projects and the continuation of existing policies, while challenging opposition leaders to explain how their proposals would improve the lives of Kenyans.

The early political activity comes as both sides prepare for an election expected to be closely contested. Opposition leaders are seeking to build on public concerns about the cost of living and governance, while Ruto is positioning his administration’s development record as the main argument for another term.

The President’s North Rift tour combines visits to government projects with engagements with local residents. The region remains an important political support base for Ruto, giving him an opportunity to highlight ongoing projects and strengthen his backing ahead of the election.

As the campaign period approaches, the opposition faces the twin challenges of agreeing on a presidential candidate and developing a common policy agenda. Ruto, meanwhile, is seeking to make his administration’s record a central issue in the 2027 contest.
