Thousands of Nairobi residents, businesses and institutions are expected to experience water shortages for about 24 hours following the shutdown of a major supply pipeline for emergency repairs.

The Athi Water Works Development Authority closed the NCT-Kigoro-Gigiri-Kabete pipeline to allow engineers to carry out urgent maintenance. Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company announced the disruption in a public notice, listing several neighbourhoods across the city that would experience reduced or interrupted water supply.

Affected areas include Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Riverside and parts of Ngong Road. Residents in Woodley, Adams Arcade, Ngumo West and the Golf Course estates are also expected to experience shortages. Parts of Kibera, including Lindi, Kambi Muru, Silanga and Gatwekera, are among the other affected locations.

The shutdown is also expected to affect key institutions and diplomatic facilities. These include areas around the United Nations Environment Programme headquarters and the United States Embassy. Parts of Westlands, Parklands, Brookside, Lower Kabete and General Mathenge are also on the list of affected areas.

In Nairobi West, residents around Mai Mahiu Road, Wilson Airport and neighbouring estates have been advised to prepare for interruptions. Other affected locations include Ngara, City Park, Forest Road, Limuru Road and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Nairobi Water has urged customers in the affected areas to use their available water reserves carefully while repair work continues. The company has apologised for the inconvenience and advised households and businesses to make arrangements to manage their water needs during the shutdown.

The duration of the interruption will depend on the progress of the repair work. Once the pipeline is restored, water supply is expected to resume, although some areas may experience delays as pressure gradually returns across the distribution network. Residents have been advised to conserve water and make use of stored supplies until normal service resumes.
