President William Ruto has intensified his criticism of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, mocking his political party, The Equitable Party (TEP), during a development tour of West Pokot County.

Ruto dismissed the party's prospects as he inspected road and connectivity projects in the North Rift region. TEP was launched in Nairobi earlier this month and has endorsed Sifuna as its preferred presidential candidate. Although the President did not mention the senator by name, his remarks appeared directed at him and his political allies.

The President questioned the party's credibility and direction, while also making personal remarks about its leadership. He used the occasion to contrast his administration's development agenda with what he described as opposition politics focused on rhetoric rather than practical solutions.

The latest exchange comes as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. While the government continues to highlight infrastructure and economic programmes, opposition figures are seeking to establish political platforms capable of challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Sifuna has also criticised the President's approach. Speaking at a burial ceremony in Kirinyaga County earlier this month, the senator accused Ruto of directing political attacks at allies of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Sifuna argued that politicians associated with Raila were increasingly becoming targets following the former opposition leader's death. He said the language used against him echoed the insults and accusations that Raila faced from his political opponents throughout his career.

The senator also challenged Ruto's repeated description of him as "Mr Empty", suggesting that the remarks were part of an effort to undermine emerging opposition leaders. He argued that the President's attacks reflected concerns about the political contest ahead of the next election.

The confrontation comes as opposition leaders compete to establish themselves as potential presidential candidates. Despite several politicians expressing interest in challenging Ruto in 2027, the opposition has yet to agree on a single candidate who can unite its various factions.
