Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Shuts Down Chandarana Foodplus Outlets over Racism Claims

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has ordered the cancellation of licenses for all Chandarana Foodplus supermarkets in the city.

Sonko announced the shutdown of the chain retailer following claims of racial bias that have sparked outrage from Kenyan social media users.

In a statement to newsrooms, the Governor said he has directed the enforcement of the shutdown beginning Monday.

Chandarana Foodplus has been on the spot after a racially sensitive email leaked online over the weekend, sparking fury.

“We are delighted to inform you that our supermarket chain, would like to give you free vouchers to winner/raffles/best performer/runners-up candidate in upcoming events. As we are now focusing on white people to attract our supermarkets," the email to managers from the retail giant’s Marketing Specialist Rima Patel read.

The email communication appeared to imply that the retail chain was only interested in white customers.

In a statement after the resulting outrage, Chandarana Supermarket apologized for the email stating that it as an error made by “one of our very new and recent hires in the marketing department.”

“Her lack of proficiency in the English language is an easy way to justify this horrendous error.”

“The immense magnitude of this error undoubtedly comes to us as a severe embarrassment and all the apologies in the world cannot make such a wrong a right again,” added the supermarket.

Good job Sonko, wish the same will apply to the so called new Africa colonizers aka the CHINESE people. Sonko i salute you on this one.

Good job Gov. Sonko. They need to respect us in our country.

Ya blame it on the new hire but the sentence reads very clear. I do not know what riches Kenya is chasing after if we can not be respected by foreigners. Wakae na SGR na super market zao. Better to be POOR but have your dignity intact. At the US embassy you pay 17k today for a visa appointment but they chase you out like a dog without asking for supporting evidence that is your documents. No refund of the 17k which is very connish.Do they treat Europeans the same when they want American visas? Good Question. Sonko, thank you for stepping up to deal with this nonesense and I wish you were dealing with SGR. We as Kenyans have to speak up. Just because it is not happening to you today does not mean it will not happen to you tomorrow.

Charity begins at home. So Shut down MUNGIKI and Tribalism before Shuttong down Racism.

  5. Karing'aJul 30, 2018

"Pharmacist"Sonko should also move with speed to ban the racist "disciplinarian" SGR(CHINESE) trains from passing or entering Nairobi. He knows very well that they have not denied canning Kenyan employees among other evils meted to the citizens by this domonic employer. Then to prove he rules Nairobi,Sonko must close the BLOCK and INTERCONITEL HOTELs which have not been admitting Africans if you are not a known billinaire for dacades.

I will not be surprised that the shutdown only lasts a few days, but at least the outrage will knock some sense into some knuckleheads in there.

Indians still think black people are inferior monkeys only lacking tails. Sonko, I support your action. They can relocate their business interests to India.

Kenyans wouldn't know racism even if it hit them in the face.

    THIS IS NOT RACISM!

Advertisement industries do this all the time... tap into markets where they see profitable outcomes, may it be gender, ethnicity, age etc.

RACISM IS what is happening at the SGR to our black brothers and sisters. Maybe governor Sonko and the rest of the govt. should spend their resources and time on this issue.

Sema yako kwanza.Sonko should tell Kenyans why he and his 15 wild guards wielding AK47 rifles entered LEE FUNERAL HOME chasing out everybody including mourning relatives but the dead resisted.

Can law experts tell me wheater Sonko, the governor/owner of Nairobi has any authority in the laws of Kenya to close a lawfully licenced business operating in the city? Can he also tell those Kenyans celebrating for nothing the amount of money they will pay CHADARANA OWNERS?Nakwambia mutamulipa billions, auze hiyo biashara na afungue ingine ya kuokota pesa zenu mujute.

Ndugu @Karing'a, Umesema kweli.

Hehehehe it’s funny the way most dudes r commenting about racism n yet they r stuck in white mans land where they r bullied everyday, kiss their ass everyday, worship n trust them everyday more than their own black pple n still worship n praise the white Jesus every Sunday? But this one Sonko Good job.

  13. AnosJul 30, 2018

From my little knowledge, I was of the impression that white Jesus is celebrated and worshipped more in most Kenyan homes or is that not the case? If you not sure, just go to your mother's house and tell me which pictures (idols) you see dotting her living room wall. Then you can come back and lash at us.

Hapa Baniani amepata pesa ya mbule isiopungua shs 10b.kutoka kwa bongolala Kenyans.Sonko's only good job was to substitute jambazi Kindero although both should have been taxpayer's guests at Kimiti long ago.Ujinga kitu mbaya-How can you convict and sentence somebody from social media evidence even without his side of story?Trump would have been impeached long ago if his tweets were be considered. But the same creators of social media consider it as fake/joke/heasy,gutter which can't be relied on.

Thank you Sonko. Good move, it's a start. If the courts get bribed, Mwananchi must follow and not patronize such businesses. The time reject such treatment of Kenyans is at hand. This is a path to Re-colonization, and must be stopped before Kenyans face a full blown war on racism. It's coming. This is the second scrabble for Africa. We must demand action from our government and if the government fails us, we must take law into our own hands in making sure we expose such businesses. We need to start using our camera's and taping those incidents. May the real God help Kenya!!!
