Editorial Guidelines

Mwakilishi.com is a news publication for Kenyans living abroad and for readers in Kenya. It is published by Sabio Technologies, LLC. These guidelines describe how we work and what readers can expect from us.

Our mission

We report the news that matters to the Kenyan diaspora: Kenya, diaspora communities, immigration, business, sports, culture and obituaries. We aim to be accurate, fair, clear and independent.

Accuracy and sourcing

  • We base our reporting on verifiable sources: official statements and records, court documents, named sources, and reports from established news organisations, which we credit.
  • We check names, figures, dates and quotes before publishing, and we say when something is unconfirmed.
  • We do not publish rumours as fact, and we do not invent quotes, sources or images.
  • When we build on another outlet's reporting, we say so and link to it where we can.

Fairness and independence

  • We try to give people and organisations we report on a fair chance to respond to serious allegations.
  • We separate news from opinion. Opinion and commentary are labelled as such.
  • Our editorial decisions are not for sale. Advertisers, sponsors and partners have no say over our news coverage.

Use of AI tools

Our editors may use AI tools to help with research, summarising source material, drafting, translation and the audio ("Listen") versions of stories. AI is a tool, not an author: an editor reviews, checks and approves every article before it is published, and Mwakilishi is responsible for everything we publish. The audio versions are read by a computer voice from the published text.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we correct it promptly and, for significant errors, add a note to the article saying what was changed. To report an error, please contact us with the article link and what needs fixing.

Reader comments

  • Every comment is reviewed by a moderator before it appears.
  • We do not publish comments that are abusive, hateful, harassing, defamatory, spam, or that share private information.
  • Any reader can report a comment or block a commenter. Reports go to our moderators, who remove comments that break these rules.

Reader submissions

Readers can send us stories, photos and tips through Submit a story. We check submissions before publishing anything and may edit them for length, clarity and accuracy.

Advertising

Advertising is clearly separated from news and labelled "Advertisement". Ads are served by Google AdSense and by direct advertisers; they do not influence what we report.

Privacy and sensitive coverage

We take extra care with stories involving children, victims of crime, health, grief and immigration status, and we avoid identifying people where that could put them at risk without a clear public interest.
