Kisii Senator Onyonka Hints at Joining Jubilee to Back Matiang’i in 2027

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has hinted at a possible change in political affiliation ahead of the 2027 general election.

During a televised interview, Onyonka said he remains committed to supporting former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who is expected to run for president in 2027. He added that his loyalty to Matiang’i could include joining the Jubilee Party if advised to do so.

“I have so much respect for ODM, but if I find that I will win my seat with Jubilee, I will just go there,” he said, noting that he has previously changed parties to secure electoral success.

Onyonka’s remarks come as ODM undergoes internal restructuring following the death of Raila Odinga, prompting discussions about the party’s leadership and future direction. The senator said the opposition must develop new strategies to stay relevant but ruled out any alignment with President William Ruto or the Kenya Kwanza coalition.

He maintained that his role is to hold the government accountable and dismissed claims that his criticism of the administration signals potential cooperation.

The senator praised opposition leaders who have resisted pressure to join the government, citing Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as an example of political independence.

He also commented on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s combative approach, acknowledging that while divisive, it appeals to certain sections of the public.

Onyonka expressed confidence in Matiang’i’s political future, particularly after former President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed him as Jubilee’s deputy party leader.

He said the appointment strengthens Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions and positions him as a key contender in 2027.
