Most of You Drive Better Cars Than Me, Kenyan Landlord Tells Tenants Who Requested 50% Rent Waiver

A landlord from Kiambu County has turned down a request by his tenants to offer them a 50 percent rent waiver amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Residents of Jowac Apartments had sent the request to their landlord named Wambugu through a letter, saying the stay home order occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on their income, making it hard for them to meet their rental obligations.

"We are watching developments about coronavirus very closely and, as you might imagine, we are really concerned. Our financial circumstances have changed completely because of COVID-19 due to government’s advice on people to work from home.”

"Because of this, we would like to discuss the possibility of a 50% rent waiver for a period of May and June as we monitor how the situation goes bearing the fact that most of us are on unpaid leave," part of their letter read.

But in response, the landlord dismissed their request, noting that the property was built through a mortgage and that he is presently required to repay Sh1.04 million per month.

Besides, Wambugu asked the tenants not to assume that he earns more than them simply because he is a landlord, saying that most of them drive better cars than him.

"For your information, I am paying a loan of Sh1.048 million per month. Your request is untenable. Never assume that a person has more disposable income than you merely because he is your landlord.”

“Indeed, some of my tenants drive better cars than me. Most buildings are constructed using loans," he replied.

Bingo! and Below the Belt; Rwap!!!

  2. JamesMay 21, 2020

    🤣🤣 Unfortunately!

  3. sokoraMay 21, 2020

Tenants can request delay in payment but not forgiveness of rent. Loans must be serviced. I would have responded similarly.

  4. GeneMay 22, 2020

well apparently not in the United States. All Republican Congress essentially gave and granted billions of dollars to large corporations. wow telling the average worker they had to go through the hassle of going through the unemployment application process, which means they get a small amount, that can barely pay a months rent.

  5. Jeff l PithoudMay 22, 2020

Boo hoo poor Gene go tell Swillery and Bildo. Oh yeah lets us eat some ice cream.

  6. Lucas ChinMay 22, 2020

    Jesus. You’re a fucking idiot

  7. JoseMay 23, 2020

Well you are wrong! the congress in the United states is not ran by Republicans, the Democrats hold majority. So if you think the Republican are the bad guys, please make sure you have the right facts before you make a comment.

  8. J.May 23, 2020

Republicans control 2/3 of the government at the moment. The senate and the presidency. Democrats only control the house. A bill must go through all three to be signed into law.

Come on, there's even a song about this.

  9. JW PesanteMay 23, 2020

You don’t know what you are talking about. The US Congress has 2 parts: the House and the Senate. The House can recommend a budget. The Senate can make changes and then approves it. It is the Senate that approved that bill and the Senate is controlled by Republicans led by Mitch McConnell.

  10. ChrisMay 23, 2020

Yes, the Democrats control the majority of the House of Representatives, which creates bills to then be voted on. Then said bills are sent to THE REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED SENATE (whom have already showed time and time again they have no interest helping the American people) to again be voted on. Now if that bill passes (they rarely do because most of the proposed COVID-19 relief bills have been geared towards helping the people, ie. stimulus checks, rent forgiveness, student loan forgiveness and other policy) it is then sent to the President to be either signed into law or vetoed. Go the fuck back to school and learn some shit man. Being stupid isn't doing you any favors.

  11. BillyMay 23, 2020

I believe all the Idiots running shit right now, and I mean shit, came out of school. Schooling is part of the problem not solution

  12. Aniya Romainger, J.D.May 23, 2020

Says the person who's jealous he never got an opportunity for school.

Capitalism is the problem, if you were intelligent at all you'd understand this.

But you didn't go to school!! 😂🤣😂

    Fucking moron.

  13. KyleMay 23, 2020

Incorrect Jose, while Democrats hold a slim majority in the house, Republicans hold a commanding majority in the Senate which ultimately holds the power of the purse strings and tried to eliminate almost all financial relief for the working class while writing a blank check with no oversight for corporations and included even more tax breaks for the wealthiest people in America that in no way needed them.

  14. Aniya Romainger, J.D.May 23, 2020

Considering republicans want certain groups dead or removed from our country. I will counter with the fact you're not American, and you're a fucking moron. Keep to your own. - An American with a law degree.

  15. Stacey JacksonMay 23, 2020

Wow! Did not realize that telepathy was taught at law school. How wonderful it must be to be able to know what everyone wants.

Seriously, you have no idea what I want.

The country is ran by a corrupted idiot , so it doesn't matter who has the majority seats , all bail out money that is designed to help small businesses went to his friends who voted for him as a GRANT money !!

  17. WayneMay 23, 2020

You’re only half right. Democrats control the house, republicans control the senate.

  18. TomMay 24, 2020

You are a moron and incorrect - Republicans have an undeniable majority. Get your facts right next time and maybe not from Facebook?

  19. Dave!May 23, 2020

Your comment is laughable. You are stating something you have heard somewhere or read somewhere, because you obviously have no idea how the enhanced unemployment is actually working.
I have a friend who is wait staff at a local restaurant layed off during this pandemic. Her boss has asked her to return to work yet she refused. Her unemployment is just over $650 per week, close to three times what she made working.
So maybe you should do a little research before trying to politicize a pandemic.

  20. Biddy bumbaMay 23, 2020

You say business paperwork is easy but unemployment paperwork is hard lol. Working is a lot harder than an hour of paperwork.

  21. Aniya Romainger, J.D.May 23, 2020

Because you're a heartless capitalist loving piece of shit? I hope you get the virus next.

  22. Ex diasporanMay 21, 2020

    Live within your means

  23. codyMay 22, 2020

i know, right! can't believe that landlord bought a property he couldn't afford if a global pandemic hit the economy.

  24. To CodyMay 22, 2020

It was his way of making financial stability dipshit

  25. LightbulbMay 22, 2020

He is pretty clearly being sarcastic.

  26. GeneMay 22, 2020

He did buy a property he could afford, with the full amount of rent that's paid towards him to pay his mortgage. the issue is not the landlord's, the issue is the tenants, who live at the edge of their financial means and so within one month could not afford to pay their rent. I vote for the landlord.

  27. GeraldMay 22, 2020

Before you make such a remark of people living beyond their means, think twice, who would be renting if its not those people. I believe in an economy where people spend. I similarly have rentals and some of my tenants drive Range rovers and Land cruisers V8 while i drive a smaller car, yet i understand their situation and am open to discussions when approached.

  28. JayshonMay 22, 2020

The landlord has a mortgage too pay. If the financial institution doesn't give the landlord relief how can he give his tenants relief. If the tenants don't pay his loan goes into default, his credit suffers and there goes his business. It goes. Other ways.

  29. WayneMay 23, 2020

Ur right if the bank not giving the land lord a break how can the land lord give them one . I suppose those renters wouldn't make up the different s when back to work either . they the renters go to think if the apts go in foreclosures they will be kick out of their apt.

  30. VanessaMay 22, 2020

Yes i with the landlord...sell your cars

  31. CQ186May 22, 2020

NO ONE has ever considered a pandemic when making financial decisions. Not even big businesses, banks, individuals, etc....hell not even the Gov't. Did you? This pandemic has changed everyone for varying reasons.

  32. ricegfMay 22, 2020

Yes. We teach our financial students to prudently plan for emergencies by saving enough money to cover a half year of expenses, constantly rotating through a month of non-perishable food in case supplies are disrupted, and avoiding debt in case your cash flow is disrupted. Thus, when the pandemic hit, we were prepared.

This was actually common for those who survived the Great Depression, including my parents, who taught me. I suspect it will be a lot more common after the Great Pandemic as well. At least, it should be! Because this is not the last crisis of your life.

  33. Micky2timesMay 23, 2020

Absolutely right ,, 90% of Americans live beyond their means ,, sad but true ,,, they want the Louis Vuitton bags, Versace shades , jordans, spas , but now its I can pay my rent ,,, but I got my nails done and I'm drivin the BEAMA

  34. M Aaron TaylorMay 23, 2020

Can't believe you accepted a job you couldn't pay rent for during a global pandemic besides getting unemployment and stimulus checks from your Uncle Sam babysitter.

  35. BabylonianMay 22, 2020

    Exactly 💯

  36. ChanadowMay 22, 2020

LIVE WITH IN YOUR MEANS?? HOW DARE YOU THESE PEOPLE WERE STRIPPED OF THERE MEANS. REQUESTING HALF RENT WHEN YOU HAVE NO INCOME IS GENEROUS WHEN MORE THAN HALF OF THE POPULATION IS REFUSING TO PAY ANYTHING AT ALL. SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING. AND MAYBE THE LANDLORD SHOULD LIVE WITHIN IN HIS MEANS BECAUSE HE IS DEPENDANT ON HIS TENANTS TO PAY HIS MORTGAGE. NOW RUN AND TELL THAT!

  37. FlynnMay 23, 2020

I'd just like to point out that the landlord's mortgage is for the building the tenants live in. If he hadn't taken the mortgage out their current homes wouldn't exist.

  38. GaryMay 23, 2020

After reading your comments (by the way in caps) it just tell me that know nothing about financial education or probably I say you have no education at all.

Probably you are one of those stupid tenants.

  39. WayneMay 23, 2020

Unlike other renters NOT PAY RENT HOW DO THEY PAY FOR WATER AND ELE ? And far as those renters not paying I tell u what I charge late fees per month of $50 and if REFUSE to pay I would EVIC PLUS SUE

  40. Aniya Romainger, J.D.May 23, 2020

Biggest lie capitalism has ever taught.

    ....and you're a fucking moron.

  41. SeroneyMay 21, 2020

Tough times, tough decisions! I reduced rent may not help much; maybe the tenants should request the landlord to delayed rent payment for a few months until conditions improve!

  42. MugikuyuMay 21, 2020

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

  43. KenyaMay 21, 2020

If the tu-ploti are auctioned they will be the first to spread the gossips.

  44. StevoMay 22, 2020

    Straight and to the point!
Many tenants need to know what landlords go through to build these houses!

  45. JohnMay 22, 2020

I am a tenant myself and I would advise the tenants to move to house they can afford for the time being I did that myself. Don't pile up debts so you can live stylish.

Adapt and get yourself out of that situation when you still have the means

  46. NyamburaMay 24, 2020

I did the same!! btw people have to pay rent!!my Dad is a landlord too and we are tenants in some other place,l have another rental near my place of study and all these houses need to be paid!!Kaisari apewe chake!

  47. Dr maSewerage. PhDMay 22, 2020

I own a rental unit. Ive never owned a car. Though i drive a borrowed car. I have not been paid 2 month rent by my driving tenants . I'm living on handouts from siblings.

  48. GregMay 22, 2020

Did you have a job before the pandemic or was your rental unit your only form of income? If you were furloughed, I feel for your situation. However if this rental was your only form of income, then you should probably think about getting a real job once this whole pandemic mulls over. Being a landlord isn't a job, it's being a leech.

  49. kathyMay 22, 2020

Greg, being a landlord doesnor mean your a leech, i put 20% down when buying my rental house for my son,bit only costv$70,000
12 years ago, bur i thoughtvir a good investment, my son eventually moved to something bigger, i gave lived frugal foe the past 20 years, now im retired, this is a small imcome foe me, i still have a mortgage, just because I don't go out to eat all the time, dont buy a lot of clothes and save, been divorced 30 years, but i know how to save most women cant say that, i manage well, so dont go calling people leeches just because they work hard and invest. Va beach resident

  50. theresaMay 23, 2020

    What a stupid comment.
That makes your president and his Kushner family biggest leeches in the world, you dumb trash. Being a property owner is a business
And renting is business contract between people that should be honored. Renters who seek to take advantage of that contract are the leeches especially for smaller landlords.
