South Australian police are investigating the death of Caleb Leriano, 24, as a homicide.

Leriano was found with critical injuries early on 11 March after his red BMW struck a stobie pole in Morphett Vale, a suburb of Adelaide. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities initially treated the incident as a traffic accident, but further examination revealed injuries inconsistent with a crash, leading detectives to reclassify the case as murder.

A graduate of Kenya Utalii College, Leriano had moved to Australia and worked as a chef in the disability care sector. Police believe he drove to an area near Sapphire Reserve for a meeting shortly before the incident. Investigators have stated that the attack was unlikely to be random, though the purpose of the meeting is unclear.

A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Perth, Western Australia, and is expected to face extradition proceedings in Perth Magistrates Court before being transferred to South Australia to answer a murder charge. Police have searched two homes and a local park with assistance from the State Emergency Service and are appealing to residents with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area between 12:30am and 1:30am to come forward.

Leriano’s family described him as cheerful and ambitious, mourning the loss of a young man pursuing his career abroad. His death follows shortly after the killing of another Kenyan, Edna Mmbali, a 31-year-old postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, who was found in a river in Berkshire on 8 March after going missing in February.
