Court Detains Four Suspects as Probe Into Dr Victoria Mutiso's Murder Widens

The investigation into the killing of psychiatrist Dr Victoria Mutiso has expanded after courts in Nairobi and Mavoko ordered four suspects to remain in custody as detectives pursue further inquiries.

At Mavoko Law Courts, Principal Magistrate Lilian Nyabando directed that advocate Angela Mulwa and her co-accused, Nelson Masiga, remain in custody until Tuesday afternoon. The court will then decide whether to grant detectives a 21-day custodial order.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said more time is needed to trace several vehicles believed to be linked to the fatal shooting. Investigators told the court that some of the vehicles were reported stolen during a disputed eviction earlier this year.

Prosecutors said one of the missing vehicles was recovered at premises linked to Mulwa and Masiga, while others have not yet been found. Defence lawyers opposed the application, arguing that the request for extended detention was excessive.

They maintained that the dispute arose from a lawful eviction and questioned why police had waited several months before pursuing the investigation. In separate proceedings at the Milimani High Court, Rose Mbithe Mulwa and her son, Chris Mulwa, were ordered to remain in custody for a further 21 days.

The court directed that Rose Mbithe Mulwa be held at Kilimani Police Station and Chris Mulwa at Kileleshwa Police Station. The judge said the detention was necessary to prevent interference with witnesses and protect the integrity of the investigation.

The pair had been arrested earlier after being identified as key suspects in the murder inquiry. Defence lawyer Danstan Omari accepted the court's decision but argued that possession of the disputed property should not be treated as evidence of criminal conduct.

The investigation now covers allegations of property destruction, vehicle theft and the killing of Dr Mutiso, who was shot dead while travelling to work on 29 July. Detectives are examining whether her death is connected to a long-running matrimonial property dispute involving her family.

The inquiry has also renewed focus on the September 2025 killing of a lawyer who had represented Professor David Ndetei, Dr Mutiso's husband, in the same property dispute.
