Kwale Residents Advised on Safe Migration and Support for Kenyans Abroad

The government has taken diaspora protection and support services to communities in Kwale County through the Diaspora Mashinani programme, giving families a direct channel to raise concerns about relatives working abroad.

The State Department for Diaspora Affairs (SDDA) held meetings in Kombani and Manyangakuro, where residents were briefed on government support available to Kenyans overseas. Officials also advised prospective migrant workers on measures to take before travelling abroad.

The sessions were led by Anne Mruche, Deputy Director for Skills and Expertise, together with officials from the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration and local National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs). Deputy County Commissioner Fridah Kawira led the local administration team.

Officials focused on the welfare and protection of Kenyans working abroad.

Families were informed about how to seek government assistance when relatives face difficulties overseas. Prospective migrant workers were advised to verify recruitment agencies and employment contracts before travelling.

They were also urged to ensure they have the required documentation, including valid passports and work visas. Officials stressed the importance of pre-departure preparation to promote safe and orderly migration.

The meetings also highlighted the importance of skills development in accessing international employment opportunities. Residents were encouraged to pursue training that matches demand in overseas labour markets, particularly in nursing, information and communications technology (ICT) and engineering.

Mruche highlighted Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programmes as ways for workers to strengthen their skills and improve their prospects in foreign labour markets. The outreach involved 18 NGAOs, including chiefs from Diani and Matuga sub-counties, who were briefed on diaspora engagement and safe labour mobility. Their participation is intended to strengthen the role of local administrators in linking families with government services and information.

The Kwale meetings are part of the nationwide rollout of Diaspora Mashinani, which aims to bring diaspora-related services closer to communities. The programme uses local administrative structures to connect citizens with government officials and improve awareness of safe migration practices and channels for reporting cases involving Kenyans in distress abroad.

The initiative also recognises the role of families in diaspora affairs. Relatives often remain closely involved when Kenyans encounter difficulties overseas, making community-level access to information and government support an important part of efforts to protect migrant workers.

As Kenya expands opportunities for employment in foreign labour markets, the programme places emphasis on safe migration, skills development and access to support services for both migrant workers and the families they leave behind.
