Kenya’s Ambassador to the United States, David Kerich, has urged Kenyans living abroad to strengthen community ties and support networks to address social isolation and mental health challenges.

Kerich made the appeal during a fellowship gathering at Destiny Hill Church in Minnesota, where he encouraged Kenyans to build stronger connections through community organisations, faith groups and social associations. He noted that living far from home can create emotional and social challenges, particularly when migrants lack the family networks and support systems they relied on in Kenya.

He urged community members to look out for one another and create environments where those facing difficulties can seek support. The ambassador’s remarks came during a four-day mobile consular outreach programme in Minnesota aimed at bringing government services closer to Kenyans living in the United States.

The programme provided an opportunity for residents to access consular assistance while engaging directly with Kenyan government representatives.

After the church gathering, Kerich visited the Mobile Consular Services Centre at Grace Church in Brooklyn Park. He interacted with Kenyans seeking assistance and reviewed the delivery of services at the centre.

The outreach was intended to make consular services more accessible and reduce the challenges Kenyans abroad face when obtaining official documents and other government assistance. It also provided an opportunity for embassy officials to engage with the community and understand their needs.

Local leaders, volunteers, religious institutions and community organisations helped organise activities and encourage participation in the programme. The embassy also recognised Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley for her role in coordinating several events during Kerich’s visit and strengthening connections among Kenyans in Minnesota and other parts of the United States.

Kerich’s appeal highlighted the importance of community support for people adjusting to life in a foreign country. For many migrants, local associations and faith groups provide connections that help fill the gap left by family and friends in their home country.

Kerich urged Kenyans to maintain these connections, emphasising the importance of mutual support and community participation in addressing isolation and promoting well-being among diaspora members.
