Indian Authorities Arrest Kenyan Woman Exploiting Jobseekers on Facebook

A Kenyan woman was on Monday apprehended in India for reportedly deceiving unsuspecting individuals searching for employment opportunities online.

The elaborate scheme came to light after one victim bravely reported their experience, recounting how they were duped into transferring Sh120,200 (approximately 69,000 Indian rupees) under the pretence of securing a job. Reports from Hindustan Times indicate that the suspects had perfected the art of approaching individuals on social media platforms, presenting enticing job prospects both domestically and internationally.

Once the victim was convinced of the legitimacy of the offer, the fraudsters swiftly requested a monetary transfer, often fabricating urgent scenarios like being stranded at the airport to elicit quick funds. The promise of reimbursement and a swift job placement added allure to their deceitful tactics. As soon as the transactions were completed, the suspects would promptly vanish, deactivating their accounts and leaving victims in the wake of their deception.

The authorities, responding to the victim's report, conducted investigations that led to the arrest of the duo. Multiple mobile devices were confiscated for further scrutiny as part of the ongoing inquiry. Ahead of their court appearance, the suspects are now in custody for a mandated five-day period. This incident adds to a growing trend of Kenyan nationals encountering legal issues in India. Throughout the year, several Kenyans have been detained in the country for involvement in drug and human trafficking.

Indian authorities reveal that a significant number of these apprehended individuals lure victims with promises of lucrative employment, only to exploit them later in illicit operations involving sex and drug trafficking. The prevailing high unemployment rate in Kenya has been identified as a contributing factor, propelling individuals toward involvement in criminal activities.
