Kalonzo Urges Renaming of Ithookwe Stadium in Honour of Raila Odinga

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has urged that the refurbished Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County be renamed in honour of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

Kalonzo made the appeal during a visit to Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he joined family members and political allies to commemorate Raila's life and contributions. In his remarks, he called on the Kitui County Assembly to table a motion formally renaming the facility, describing the move as a fitting way to recognise Raila's dedication to national unity, democratic reform, and youth empowerment through sport.

“Kitui County Assembly, I want you to move a motion expeditiously to name the newly renovated Ithookwe Stadium Raila Amolo Odinga Stadium,” Kalonzo said.

The proposal aligns with ongoing efforts by political leaders to memorialise Raila through public institutions and national projects. Kalonzo also supported Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga’s plan to name the upcoming Talanta Stadium in Nairobi after Raila, calling it a suitable tribute to his long-standing role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape and promoting inclusive dialogue.

Reflecting on their personal friendship, Kalonzo shared memories of his and Raila's shared passion for football and their support for Arsenal FC. He light-heartedly remarked that while he considered himself the better player, Raila was unmatched as an enthusiastic commentator.

During the visit, Kalonzo also presented around 100 head of cattle to Raila's family-a traditional gesture of respect symbolising deep admiration and solidarity.
