ODM Marks 20 Years with Three-Day Celebrations in Mombasa
ODM opened its 20th-anniversary celebrations in Mombasa on Friday.
The three-day programme at the Mama Ngina Waterfront brings together all party leagues in a coordinated schedule marking two decades of ODM’s political activity. The Persons with Disabilities League is meeting at Whitesands Hotel to discuss accessibility within the party and public service, as well as the contribution of its members to ODM’s development.
At the ASK Grounds, the Women’s League is hosting an event that includes the launch of a legacy book documenting the leadership and achievements of women in ODM since its formation. The Youth League is holding forums at Fort Jesus on representation, economic empowerment and leadership opportunities, concluding with a concert aimed at engaging younger members.
Senior officials, long-serving members and new leaders are attending the celebrations, including Suna East MP Junet Mohamed. President William Ruto and former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, both linked to ODM’s early years, are expected to join the programme in recognition of the party’s role in Kenya’s political history.
This anniversary is the first major gathering since the death of ODM’s founding leader, Raila Odinga, on 15 October. Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, recently endorsed as the party’s new leader pending approval by the National Delegates Convention, described the commemorations as both a tribute to Raila Odinga and a moment of transition.
Beyond honouring its former leader, the anniversary provides a platform for ODM to reaffirm its commitment to political reform, civil liberties and devolution. With the 2027 elections approaching, the party faces the task of remaining influential while adapting to changing political dynamics and rising expectations from younger supporters.
