Kenya's Brigid Kosgei smashed the women’s marathon record as she retained her Chicago title on Sunday morning.

Kosgei completed the 42-kilometer race in two hours 14 minutes 04 seconds to eclipse the 16-year-old women's marathon world record held by Paula Radcliffe of Britain.

Radcliffe set the record in 2003 at the London Marathon after recording a time of 2 hours 15 minutes 25 seconds.

The Sunday victory in Chicago adds to 25-year-old Kosgei’s win in London this year when she clocked 2 hours 18 minutes 20 seconds, becoming the youngest winner of the race.

In the men’s race, Kenyan Lawrence Cherono finished first in 2 hours, 5 minutes 44 seconds ahead of Dejene Debela of Ethiopia, who clocked 2:05:45.

Chicago Marathon defending champion Mo Farah of Britain finished eighth in 2:09:58.

Few years ago, there was a racial debate that moved to marathon, and one white racist acknowledged that there were more black women winning the marathons but the never come close to Paula Radclif's world record of 2.15.25.- I it was shattered today. Thanks to Brigid Kosgei.
When I read that ,not too long ago she had run a1/2 marathon at 1.04..I knew sooner or later she would break the world record.I also feel that Eliud Kipchoge's under 2 hours marathon feat motivated her.
Yes had work, discipline and dedication can work wonders. This has been agood week for Kenyan athletes, and great new to all Kenyans. In fact agood month.Kenya was second to USA in the just concluded world champioships in Doha Quatar.Congratulations Brigid for breaking the wolrd record.Felicitations to you too Larry Cherono for winning Boston Marathon, and now Chicago Marathon in the same year.
